Classic Design, Fresh Perspectives in Capital Campaign

View Post

For nearly 150 years, First Baptist Church Cullman in Cullman, AL has stood at the heart of its community. Known for its traditional values, enduring faith, and multigenerational congregation, the church has continued to grow steadily—prompting a need for expanded spaces and modernized facilities that can support its mission for years to come. In response to this growth and with a desire to invest in future generations, the church launched a bold, three-year capital campaign: "For God, Forever." The initiative aims to gather support for a new 800-seat sanctuary, expand community gathering spaces, and enhance accessibility and function throughout the campus. But for FBC Cullman, this campaign was never just about construction; it was about inviting the congregation to take a step of faith and contribute to something lasting.

When designing the visual identity for "For God, Forever," our goal was to reflect both the historic foundation of FBC Cullman and its forward-looking commitment. The church's legacy spans generations, but the materials needed to connect with today's members in a clear and hopeful way. Many of the design elements were inspired directly by the church's architecture. Arches and windows became foundational motifs, echoing both the sanctuary's physical design and the symbolic idea of looking upward and outward. We kept these shapes as outlines to create soft edges and engaging negative space, bringing subtle movement and texture to each piece. The steeple of the future sanctuary also played a central visual role in the campaign. More than just a building feature, it represents a new structure that will reshape the city's skyline—symbolically pointing heavenward and reinforcing the faith-forward vision behind the campaign. The color palette took cues from the church's existing architecture, building on a foundation of dark and light navy blue. To introduce warmth and depth, we added two new tones—a vibrant linen and a warm brown sugar—which brought contrast and character. These hues balance familiarity with freshness, building on the church's established colors in a way that feels both classic and renewed. Abstract Union partnered with the church team twice throughout this campaign—first to develop the initial campaign materials, and again one year later to create celebratory and milestone-based pieces that honored the progress already made.

A Logo to Balance Legacy and Momentum

The campaign theme logo is the visual cornerstone of a capital campaign—it sets the tone, unifies materials, and helps the initiative feel clear and memorable from the very beginning. For FBC Cullman, we created a wordmark using a sans-serif font that blends classic and modern design—an intentional reflection of the church's rootedness and forward vision. We emphasized the word "forever," bolding it and pairing it with a stylized infinity symbol. Its lines appear like interwoven strands, forming a visual tapestry that ties directly to the heart of the campaign: building something lasting, together. These elements work in harmony to create a logo that feels steady, grounded, and timeless—just like the church and congregation it represents.

Carry Your Campaign Story with a Booklet & Packet Envelope

The case statement is where the story of the campaign unfolds — goals are explained, vision is cast, and the reason behind the initiative is shared in full. For FBC Cullman, we designed a case statement booklet that reflected the significance of the campaign, inviting readers to see the church's journey so far as well as where they are heading.

We leaned heavily into the campaign's outlined shape motifs, using them like windows to frame and organize content throughout the booklet. We used the whole color palette to fill different sections—creating visual contrast while keeping each spread balanced and engaging. Structured layouts provided room for both clarity and storytelling, integrating architectural renderings of the proposed sanctuary alongside photos of church members. These images helped ground the vision in real lives, reminding readers that this campaign is ultimately about people—not just plans.

To house the case statement and deliver it as a unified, intentional package, we designed a packet envelope with both function and first impressions in mind. We considered the whole experience of receiving it in the mail. The front was purposefully minimal, featuring outlined shape motifs and horizontal lines that extend off the sides—subtly guiding the reader to turn it over. On the back, a silhouette of the church and steeple offers instant recognition and builds anticipation, visually anchoring the campaign before the contents are even revealed. This piece introduced the campaign with polish and purpose, reinforcing the idea that every aspect of the initiative had been thoughtfully prepared.

A Pledge Card & Return Envelope to Make Participation Personal

The pledge card is where plans turn into action—giving members a tangible way to commit, pray, and respond to the campaign. It also serves as an essential planning tool, helping church leadership understand what support is in place and how to move the campaign forward with confidence.

We designed FBC Cullman's pledge card to be both visually striking and easy to use. We applied the lightest and darkest colors from the campaign palette to create strong contrast and clear readability. Only essential fields were included, making the card simple and accessible for every member to complete confidently.

To accompany the pledge card, we designed a return envelope that reflected both the clarity of the campaign and the excitement of contributing to something meaningful. The front featured outlined shape motifs in the corner, with horizontal lines extending to the edge—creating a sense of movement while visually balancing the stamp box and keeping the layout clean. On the back, intersecting lines and color blocking formed the illusion of a geometric string-and-seal, subtly reinforcing how personal and significant each returned envelope truly is.

Make Your Message Personal with a Letterhead & Postcard

Strong communication materials are the building blocks of a capital campaign, helping churches stay organized, build trust, and maintain momentum. Whether to convey updates, special events, or words of gratitude, having professional and cohesive communication makes every correspondence polished and professional.

The letterhead and envelope set was designed to make every campaign communication feel personal. We wanted these pieces to feel cohesive with the rest of the campaign while also standing out in a meaningful way. Both feature a vibrant linen background—a lighter tone from the palette that adds warmth and keeps the page airy and readable. Line work and shape motifs form decorative borders around the edges, sparking instant recognition without pulling focus from the message itself. To keep the campaign's vision front and center, we added a rendering of the proposed new sanctuary to the back of the envelope. This small but intentional detail reinforces that every message sent is a step toward something greater.

The postcard took on a more celebratory and invitational tone—designed to quickly capture attention and communicate key dates for the beginning of the campaign. We crafted FBC Cullman's postcard to showcase the excitement of the initiative without overwhelming the viewer with extra details. On the front, we gave visual priority to the campaign logo and a rendering of the proposed sanctuary, creating immediate recognition of the ultimate goal. The back was intentionally kept clean, with space for addresses or handwritten notes. Key dates were given breathing room, underscored by decorative details near the bottom that reinforced the campaign's visual language. Simple in form but powerful in function, this piece helped energize the congregation, build early momentum, and invite deeper participation.

Banners That Create Atmosphere & Impact

Capital campaigns are exciting times for churches, celebrating what has been accomplished and what changes could be coming. We designed two different large-format banners for FBC Cullman, helping to set the tone and anchor the campaign in their physical spaces.

The vinyl banner was designed to create an immediate impression wherever it's displayed. A bold Royal Blue background creates a strong visual presence and draws the viewer in. We used line work and shape motifs to form a decorative border, with each line leading toward the rendering of the proposed new sanctuary, keeping the campaign's goal visually front and center.

The background banner is a versatile campaign piece—portable enough to be used for services, booth events, and presentations, yet large enough to make a strong visual impact. For FBC Cullman, we applied the campaign's design language in full, ensuring the banner carried presence and clarity even from across the room. Line work and color blocking frame the rendering of the proposed sanctuary, forming the illusion of an abstract landscape. The result is a bold, flexible piece that reinforces the campaign's identity while keeping its ultimate goal in full view.

Extend Beyond Church Walls with Signage

While large banners set the tone, small signage extends the campaign's presence into everyday spaces — sidewalks, lawns, and walkways — making it easy for people to encounter and engage with the initiative outside the church walls.

The A-frame sign was designed for flexible use around the church property—ideal for event days, information sessions, or guiding foot traffic on Sundays. For FBC Cullman's A-frame, we used line work and color blocking to create strong visual frames around both the campaign logo and the rendering of the sanctuary. This intentional layout allowed for immediate recognition of the campaign and its goal, even for those passing by quickly. The result is an outdoor that leaves an impression no matter its placement.

The yard sign extended the campaign's reach into the community, offering members a tangible and visible way to show their support. We created three variations for FBC Cullman, giving individuals the ability to choose the version that resonated most with them. Each design featured a phrase set in the church's brand serif font, reinforcing a visual connection between the campaign and the larger church identity. Line work formed decorative borders around the edges, subtly drawing attention to the message and the rendering of the new sanctuary. Simple but effective, the yard signs helped raise awareness and invite curiosity throughout the city.

One Year Later: Celebrating Progress & Continued Participation

A year into a capital campaign, momentum can naturally shift —and it's often a perfect moment to re-engage the congregation with updates, gratitude, and renewed motivation. At the one-year mark of "For God, Forever," FBC Cullman asked Abstract Union to create a fresh set of materials that would celebrate what had been accomplished while continuing to invite participation.

FBC Cullman tasked us with designing a material that gave an update on the progress made in the first year of the campaign and invited readers to join a special service honoring the one-year milestone. We designed a custom brochure mailer, using both shades of blue from the campaign palette as background colors, drawing a stronger connection to the church's brand. A central image of the church team breaking ground offered a clear visual of how much had already been accomplished. To guide next steps, we placed information about continued support in a vibrant linen box—reinforcing the idea that while much has been achieved, the goals will only be realized if the church moves forward together. To complete the brochure mailer, we created a custom sticker to seal the material and add a small but recognizable touch. We used a silhouette of the church steeple in royal blue set against a vibrant linen background — subtle but symbolic. It was a detail that quietly reinforced the campaign initiative before the envelope was opened.

A Second Step Made Simple with a Handout & Envelope

To provide a second opportunity for giving, we designed a simplified handout that functioned as a secondary pledge card. We preserved the same easy-to-follow structure as the original pledge card, ensuring each section flowed naturally and remained simple to complete. To distinguish it visually, we introduced a lighter variation of the brown sugar and light royal blue from the campaign palette. The front of the handout included ample space for members to write words of praise and gratitude for what God has provided in their lives. Along the edges, line work formed a decorative border, reinforcing that every offering—whether financial or spiritual—was meaningful and personal.

To accompany the handout, we designed a custom business envelope that made returning a completed pledge both easy and intentional. To distinguish it from earlier materials, we created a two-toned back using royal blue and vibrant linen, creating a clear contrast to the original letterhead envelope. The front featured more design elements than previous mail pieces, reinforcing the excitement of helping an initiative become a reality. Even in its simplicity, the envelope carried energy and purpose—reminding every recipient that their response is part of building something lasting.

Working with FBC Cullman on "For God, Forever" was a deep and meaningful collaboration — one that brought together vision, legacy, and a shared belief in the power of thoughtful creative work. From the first materials to the one-year celebration pieces, this campaign reminded us how effective design can do more than just communicate; it can help carry a church's hope forward. This project also reflects the heart of how Abstract Union approaches capital campaigns: with strategy, specificity, and a deep respect for each church's unique story. We don't use templates or recycled ideas because your goals, congregation, and community are distinct. Our role is to align those elements through design that not only look beautiful but serve a clear purpose.

If you're looking for more inspiration, check out our continued partnership with SouthPoint Church: Continued Giving: Next Mission for SouthPoint Church. This was the second capital campaign we had the opportunity to design with their team, building on a foundation of trust and visual clarity. We developed bold, momentum-building materials that advanced their initiative and showed how thoughtful design helps churches keep their communities engaged over time.

When your campaign materials are rooted in your church's voice, values, and audience, design becomes more than aesthetic—it becomes invitational. Whether you're launching a capital campaign or looking to re-energize an existing one, we'd love to be your partner in success. Together, we'll build a visual strategy that feels purposeful, cohesive, and unmistakably yours.
